There are plenty of videos and how to's out there on how best to wintirize your bike in the cold months. I just chose one video from Revzilla to give you an idea of some of the videoes out there. Please don't blame me for the bike washing scene, it creeped me out too. I know, I know I will get plenty of replies saying "I'm not a fair weather rider" or "anyone that rides knows these basics." This post is mainly for newbies and inexperienced riders. Now the following is not an end all beat all approach, and I'm sure many of you have your own tips on how you do it. Again this is for the inexperienced or new to riding crowd out there.
Here are some tips for winterizing your motorcycle:
Store in a secure location: A locked garage that's ventilated and kept at a constant temperature is ideal. If you don't have a garage, use a cover made for motorcycles to protect it from the elements.
Wash and wax: Remove dirt, salt, and other debris that can damage the finish. Apply wax to protect against rust and moisture.
Protect the battery: Bring the battery inside and connect it to a trickle charger.
Treat the fuel: Use a fuel stabilizer to prevent the gas from degrading and coating the inside of the tank and engine parts.
Change the oil: Change the oil and filter to ensure all parts are protected from rust and damage.
Check the coolant: If your bike is liquid-cooled, top off the coolant or replace it if it's more than two years old.
Inflate the tires: Inflate the tires to the maximum psi listed on the sidewall.
Elevate the bike: Prop the bike up on front and rear stands to take pressure off the tires and block the exhaust and intake.
Lube key areas: Apply a heavy coat of grease to the chain to prevent rusting.
Fog the cylinders: If you're storing your bike for a long time, you can lubricate the inside of the motor with fogging oil.
